Ty Jerome Drafted By Phoenix At 24th Overall

Bucher says the Suns obviously liked Johnson, but says they could have traded a lot farther down in the first round and acquired more assets with that no. 11 pick, and STILL would have seen Johnson available late in the first round. Two established rotation pieces - and two first-round rookies - will officially join the Suns following the July 6 moratorium.

Johnson had a solid season with the Tar Heels, averaging 16.5 points per game with 50-percent shooting from the field and an impressive 45.6 percent shooting from deep, but the team failed to reach a Final Four and had its season ended in the Sweet Sixteen.

Johnson was projected to go later in the first round, but the Suns took him at No. 11, hoping he can give them a sharpshooting duo with Devin Booker.

Former Virginia point guard Ty Jerome was selected 24th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA Draft Thursday night.

Phoenix took North Carolina senior Cameron Johnson with the pick. Jerome also made a name as a sharpshooter.

Jerome averaged 13.6 points, 5.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds last season for the Cavaliers during their NCAA title run, and could be the point guard the Suns have been looking for.

But the team already had agreed on a deal to trade him to the Timberwolves for the 11th pick and forward Dario Saric. He also has been injury-prone - limited to 43 games last season - and is due $35 million over the next three seasons.

The Celtics first acquired the No. 24 overall pick in Thursday's National Basketball Association draft by reaching a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.
