Explosion at Plantation shopping plaza leaves 21 injured, 1 trauma alert

Her business partner was at the plaza Saturday at 11:30, when a possible gas leak led to an explosion that ripped up the LA Fitness-flagged strip mall and sent twisted pieces of roof and drywall flying.

Windows were shattered and debris was scattered throughout the area and parking lot.

Footage from inside the fitness center showed crowds hurrying out of the building, some limping and in shock, while its front windows were almost blown out front the massive blast. It was reportedly heard and felt from miles away.

The plaza where the explosion happened contains a number of restaurants and businesses.

Walaschek said dust and debris filled the air.

Non-trauma patients were transported to Westside Regional Medical Center and Plantation General Hospital, according to Gordon.

Fire department Battalion Chief Joel Gordon said there were ruptured gas lines when firefighters arrived, but he couldn't say for certain that it was a gas explosion.

At around 1:50 p.m., Gordon confirmed two victims were transported to Broward Health Medical Center in serious condition. 'We believe that. That's what it appears to be'. Local TV station WPLG said around 20 people were injured, two of them seriously. "We haven't confirmed the source of the explosion". There were no known fatalities immediately after the explosion.

"At this point, the hazards have been secured". Gordon said owners of the the cars in the Tesla charging lot near the Fountains and the Market on University, where it appears the explosion originated, could retrieve their vehicles Sunday.

This story is developing. We will focus on reports from police officials and other authorities, credible news outlets and reporters who are at the scene. The blast occurred at the Market on University shopping center.
