Madagascar 2-0 Nigeria: Super Eagles surrender Group B first place

Coach Gernot Rohr has rung five changes in the Super Eagles' line-up as the three-time African champions look forward to a Group B encounter against Madagascar in the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.

The closest the Eagles have come to a clean sheet in group phase was 13 years ago - also in Egypt - when they defeated Ghana and Zimbabwe 1-0 and 2-0 respectively but conceded one goal in a 2-1 defeat of Senegal in their third match in Port Said.

The Super Eagles had already secured their last 16 berth on match day two, while Madagascar kept their hopes alive with a win over Burundi earlier this week.

However, following a draw against Guinea in the opener and victories against Burundi and Nigeria, Madagascar finished the group stage on top with seven points.

The runners-up of Group B will take on the runners-up in Group F on July 6, also in Alexandria.

A horrific defensive mistake and a wicked deflection from a free kick allowed the Indian Ocean islanders, making their tournament debut, to finish unbeaten ahead of both Nigeria and Guinea in the standings. Pinnick is also the President of AFCON.

Abdullahi was stretched off after picking up a hamstring injury in their first match against Burundi, while Collins is yet to play a match at AFCON 2019.

Sunday's fixture will represent the fifth meeting between the two nations, and Madagascar are yet to register a win or a goal against their next opponents.

Madagascar could become the seventh nation to go unbeaten in their first three Africa Cup of Nations matches, and the first since Cape Verde in 2013.

However, it has been nearly eight years since the teams met during qualifying for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
