North Korea hails Trump-Kim meeting at DMZ as 'historic' and 'amazing'

White House national security adviser John Bolton also disputed the Times report Monday, tweeting that he read the story "with curiosity". Trump crossed over into the North Korean side of the border and stood next to Kim for a commemorative photo, the first incumbent USA president to set foot on North Korean soil.

Trump said he and Kim "had a very productive meeting" there and noted he tried to sell Kim on the prosperity he believes awaits North Korea if it gives up its nuclear program.

One of the most visible parts of North Korea's nuclear programme, the Yongbyon reactor complex is a central point of contention.

The nations, which remain technically at war, agreed last June during their first summit in Singapore to work toward the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and to improve relations.

"A North Korean cargo vessel used to transport coal was seized in violation of global sanctions against the rogue regime, the U.S. Justice Department announced Thursday, just hours after the hermit kingdom fired two suspected short-range missiles", reports Fox News.

KCNA said that during the chat between Trump and Kim, the two leaders explained "issues of easing tensions on the Korean peninsula" as well as "issues of mutual concern and interest which become a stumbling block in solving those issues", and "voiced full understanding and sympathy".

The two leaders' "bold, courageous decision" that led to the historic meeting "created unprecedented trust between the two countries" that had been tangled in deeply rooted animosity, KCNA said.

Shin Beom-chul, an analyst at the Asan Institute of Policy Studies, said the KCNA report was "typical North Korean propaganda that glorified Kim as leading the tremendous changes in geopolitics".

The unexpected invitation on Friday that took Trump's diplomatic corps by surprise while the president was attending the Group of 20 summit in Osaka, Japan, was a Hail Mary appeal that experts acknowledged paid off in symbolism - if not in immediate concrete gains.

"President Trump mentioned a comprehensive agreement and announced working-level negotiations would begin within two to three weeks".

"What have we gotten from the North Koreans, for all this pomp and circumstance and the propaganda coup of having the president of the United States crossing into North Korea?" she asked.

"This has a lot of significance because it means that we want to bring an end to the unpleasant past and try to create a new future, so it's a very courageous and determined act", Kim told reporters through an interpreter.

President Trump is back in Washington after making history in Asia. "It's good for North Korea; it's good for America, good for the world".

He said "We're not looking for speed".
