When that happens, a fraction of the moon's surface is covered by the darkest central part of the earth's shadow, called the umbra. When the Moon completely passes through the umbra or when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are perfectly aligned, a total lunar eclipse occurs. You should avoid obstructions such as trees or houses, as the moon will hang relatively low in the sky during a large part of the lunar eclipse.
