Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will not face criminal charges for 2009 rape

The two met in Las Vegas and he invited her up to his room, which is where their stories diverge.

Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo will face no charges in Las Vegas in connection with a 10-year-old sexual assault allegation because the case can not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, prosecutors said on Monday.

Police were unable to conduct an investigation at the time because she declined to say who assaulted her or where it occurred, the office said in a statement, but Mayorga contacted police in August of previous year to ask that the case be reopened, at which point she named Ronaldo as the alleged assailant.

Mayorga is identified as "V" in the release from the Vegas DA, as the names of sexual assault victims are not typically released.

Since the woman did not give any more information a meaningful investigation wasn't conducted.

'Without knowing the identity of the perpetrator or the location of the crime, detectives were unable to search for and impound vital forensic evidence, ' the prosecutors said. In addition, video evidence, showing interactions between the victim and perpetrator before and after the alleged crime, was lost.

It said that in 2010, she reached an out-of-court settlement with Ronaldo involving a $375,000 (£288,000) payment for agreeing never to go public with the allegations.

After reviewing the investigation, the DA chose not to prosecute, stating that the allegations against Ronaldo can not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

An investigation was reopened in August of past year after Mayorga contacted Las Vegas police, naming Ronaldo as the offender.

The allegation made headlines a year ago after Las Vegas police said they were investigating it. "Therefore, no charges will be forthcoming", Wolfson said in a statement.

A Request for Prosecution was submitted to the District Attorney's Office on July 8.
