Students rule out Hong Kong leader’s offer to hold talks amid protests

Boris Johnson, the former London mayor and frontrunner in the Tory leadership contest and therefore favorite to become the next United Kingdom prime minister, said he supported the Hong Kong protesters.

"Yes I do support them and I will happily speak up for them and back them every inch of the way". They want her to completely withdraw the extradition bill that would send suspects in Hong Kong to the mainland for trial. We want to keep our journalism open and accessible and be able to keep providing you with news and analysis from the frontlines of Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish World. Pressured by the protests, the government indefinitely suspended the bill, and Lam issued a public apology.

They expressed fears for the safety of their children following the storming of the city's legislature by mostly young protesters on Monday, stressing that their lives must be treasured.

According to a spokesperson, Lam has recently begun to invite young people with different backgrounds to meetings, including university students and young people who have recently participated in protests.

Protesters put up a sign reading "Protect my Hong Kong; Freedom, human rights", after breaking into the parliament chambers of the government headquarters in Hong Kong on July 1, 2019.

A leader of the Hong Kong University Students' Union, Jordan Pang, said he would only agree if the government promised not to investigate protesters involved in the protests.

The Student Union of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, one of eight major universities, has rejected the offer and states that Lam offered a meeting behind closed doors.

Lam's spokeswoman said the meeting would be held in a "small-scale and closed-door manner" to ensure an "in-depth and frank exchange of views".

"We will only consider it after the government addresses our demands", he added.

Lam, who was appointed as Hong Kong's leader by a committee dominated by pro-Beijing elites, suspended the legislation after more than a million Hong Kongers marched against it on June 9 and then a June 12 protest blocked access to the legislature and nearby streets.

He urged the government to take the initiative and listen sincerely to the people's "voices and aspirations".

They have also called for Lam to stop labeling protesters "rioters" and to introduce genuine universal suffrage.

Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule on July 1, 1997, under a "one country, two systems" formula that allows freedoms not enjoyed in mainland China, including freedom of protest and a much-cherished independent judiciary.
