Clippers to hire Lue as top assistant

LOS ANGELES - Tyronn Lue is close to a deal with the LA Clippers to become a top assistant coach on Doc Rivers' staff.

Ty Lue may end up in L.A. after all. Lue has a 128-83 career record as a head coach. Now, the veteran National Basketball Association coach may soon be tasked with taking down The King.

Lue, who previously won a title with LeBron James in Cleveland, was rumored to be a leading candidate for the Lakers head coaching job earlier in the offseason. In a league that is run by the players, Lue has found success managing personalities, and is an underrated strategic mind. He was sacked by the Cavs after an 0-6 start to last season's campaign.

The mere fact LeBron seemed more than comfortable with a reunion spoke to their relationship, and Lue's skill to relate to star players while succeeding in the court is a widely desired skill in the National Basketball Association. However, he won't be reuniting with LeBron James and the Lakers.

It looks like Tyronn Lue is headed back to Los Angeles after all, but just not with the Lakers. Except he's joining the Clippers, not the Lakers.

According to reports, Lue will likely join the Clippers as an associate head coach.

The Clippers didn't merely hire an assistant coach today. He also played under the longtime coach during a quick stint with the Orlando Magic in 2003 until Rivers was dismissed after starting the season 1-10. In the meantime, he returns to a familiar environment and a head coach he's worked very well with. He then spent the remainder of the season working in an informal role with Rivers and the Clippers.
