Coroner: At least 1 killed after massive explosion in Kentucky

One person was killed and five others injured when a regional gas pipeline ruptured Thursday, causing a massive explosion and fireball that forced the evacuation of a mobile home park, according to reports.

Emergency managers estimated that the flames rose nearly 300 feet in the air, at their peak. Emergency managers say five others are injured, and up to seven people are still unaccounted for.

Authorities evacuated residents in Moreland after the explosion, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said.

The 30-inch-wide natural gas pipeline in Lincoln County is under pressure, so the rupture at about 1:40 a.m. caused widespread damage in the area, including to nearby railroad tracks, officials said. Several structures were on fire in the Indian camp trailer park. The orange glow in the sky caused authorities to shut down Bowens Loop Road in the Moreland community near Junction City and Hustonville, including USA 127. Crews have been able to shut off the gas. All are welcome to shelter there until access to your homes is restored.

"It was impressive. It's tragic".

Trooper Robert Purdy said Thursday that the deputy responded to the area near where the explosion happened to rescue an elderly couple outside their home in the Moreland community. "Then we got to feeling the heat from the fire, so we got in our vehicle and took out".

A massive explosion was reported in Lincoln County, Kentucky, early Thursday.

Purdy said the deputy's "courageous actions" may have prevented more deaths.

Crews are assessing the damage during daylight hours.

The blast, in Moreland, a community about 40 miles (65 km) south of Lexington, was the second so far this year on Canadian energy company Enbridge Inc's Texas Eastern natural gas pipeline following an incident in OH in January that injured at least two people. Railroad tracks in the area are destroyed.

Emergency managers said the rupture involved the Texas Eastern Transmission pipeline, which is owned and operated by Enbridge. Our first concern is for those impacted by this event and ensuring the safety of the community. "We have isolated the affected line and are working closely with emergency responders to manage the situation", the spokesman said in a statement.

"Without him being there at the right time, we could have had more fatalities and casualties than we had", Purdy said.

Viewers in several counties reported seeing the fire, including people in the Lexington metropolitan area. The WKYT meteorologist said the fire showed up on radar, according to the station.
