IUPUI head coach Gardner resigns after arrest for OWI

Former Arizona Wildcats star point guard and current IUPUI men's basketball coach Jason Gardner was arrested early Monday morning for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, WRTV in Indianapolis reported.

The decision for Jason Gardner to step down was done by "mutual agreement", according to Ed Holdaway, IUPUI Assistant Athletic Director for Communications.

According to Hamilton County Jail, Gardner was arrested at 5:10 a.m. Monday in Fishers, Indiana and charged with OWI.

Officers from the Fishers Police Department arrived at the scene and found Gardner asleep behind the wheel, police said. Police say he stumbled out of his auto and failed every field sobriety test. They could also allegedly smell alcohol on his breath. He won the Indiana Mr. Basketball Award in 1999.

Associate head coach Byron Rimm II has been named interim head coach for the 2019-2020 season.

Gardner started coaching at IUPUI in 2014 and had a 64-93 career record, including 16-17 last season.
