Keanu Reeves to Reprise His Role as Neo in 'Matrix 4'

What's more, Keanu Reeves is set to reprise his role as Neo, with Carrie-Anne Moss also coming back as Trinity.

Warner Bros. has been trying for the last of couple years to find a way to get back into "The Matrix" universe, but a hold-up over producing rights slowed the project down.

The upcoming film marks a return to the franchise 16 years in the making.

The screenplay is by Wachowski, along with writer Aleksander Hemon and Cloud Atlas author David Mitchell, who previously lent his work to the Wachowskis for a big-screen adaptation. But rather than a total reboot - as has been rumored through the years - we are instead getting a fourth film in the original Matrix series. The Matrix also spawned a successful video game in 2003 timed to Matrix Reloaded: Atari's Enter the Matrix, which sold more than 5 million copies worldwide, with close to $60 million in USA sales. Here is Lana's statement to Variety on the news.

Plot details are now unknown, as is how the role of Morbius will be handled, originally played by Laurence Fishburne. Previous reports indicated that the new movie rumored to be in development would have been a prequel, with Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther) possibly set to star.

The Matrix, released in 1999, was a groundbreaking and heralded cinematic achievement at the time of its release. But I imagine we'll know more soon. Collectively the films have earned more than $1.6 billion at the global box office. Given the recent resurgence of Keanu Reeves, coupled with Hollywood's reboot-happy nature, the timing seems flawless to bring Neo back to the big screen for a bit of redemption.

Sony has not announced a release date for the film. This news comes to us via Variety.
