No indication of racial motive in Ohio mass shooting

Shoes are piled outside the scene of a mass shooting including Ned Peppers bar, Sunday, Aug. 4, 2019, in Dayton, Ohio.

Police have now identified the shooter as Mr Betts and named all nine of his victims which included his own 22-year-old sister.

Nine people have been killed in a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, police said, adding that the alleged gunman was shot dead by responding officers.

Dayton Mayer Nan Whaley (D) tried to calm the crowd.

Although those writing express an interest in killing people, they do not indicate any racial or political motive, sources said.

The victims of the Dayton attack are: Lois Oglesby, 27; Megan Betts, 22; Sayid Saleh, 38; Derrick Fudge, 57; Logan Turner, 30; Nicholas Cumer, 25; Thomas McNichols, 25; Beatrice Warren Curtis, 36; Monica Brickhouse, 39.

Police are still trying to figure out what motivated Betts to shoot and kill nine people as bars let out in the Oregon District. "Victim passed early this morning at the hospital", the city's police department said on Twitter. Rather, it filled the streets where this shooting happened.

The El Paso attack was followed just hours later by a mass shooting outside a Dayton, Ohio, bar.

"What really goes through my mind is one seems completely preventable", she said. "And when it happens, words can't describe it". Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown said responding with thoughts and prayers is not enough and stronger gun safety laws are needed. "My office stands ready to assist the Dayton community with whatever is needed to investigate and recover from this attack".

Spencer Brickler said a counselor at Bellbrook High School told him that he and his sister were on Connor Betts' hit list. "We need to take urgent action to end the gun violence epidemic".

They then engaged with Mr Betts who was wearing a mask and bullet proof vest.

Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl says that if all of the suspect's magazines were full, he would have had a maximum of 250 rounds in his possession.

Biehl said Betts' parents were having a tough time.

Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Local Schools confirmed Betts graduated in 2013 but wouldn't immediately release information about his records or answer questions about the classmates' allegations.

Dissecting Betts' movements before the attack have proven more complicated. He earned an A.B.in Social Studies and Environmental Science and Public Policy from Harvard College, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.

Apart from his high school troubles, Betts had been issued tickets for speeding and other minor traffic offenses, police said.

Biehl said the shooter had modified the weapon, but didn't detail how he did so. "I was anxious nothing would be done about this gun violence epidemic".

The Ohio shooting came hours after a young man opened fire in a crowded El Paso, Texas, shopping area, leaving 20 dead and more than two dozen injured.

Separately, police said investigators have so far found no evidence to indicate that a mass killing in the US city of Dayton was motivated by racial hatred.
