Saudi-led coalition fires flares over Yemeni port of Aden - residents

Deadly fighting has been raging in Aden since Wednesday and has been pitting the unionist forces that are loyal to the internationally recognized government against the force which does support it, however, is dominated by fighters that are seeking a renewed independence for the south.

The Yemeni minister said that the procedures for handing over the building of the country's Ministry of Interior and the Aden's oil refinery to the presidential guard forces are being discussed under the supervision of the Saudi-led coalition.

AFP journalists saw Saudi and Emirati military vehicles deployed around the positions vacated by the separatists on Saturday.

The field is located near the border with the UAE, Saudi Arabia's main partner in the coalition which has been battling the Houthis since 2015 in order to restore Yemen's ousted government.

The Huthis have a control of large parts of the northern as well as western Yemen, including their capital Sanaa.

The conflict escalated the following year when Saudi Arabia and its Sunni-Arab allies launched a massive air campaign aimed at rolling back Houthi gains in Yemen and supporting the country's pro-Saudi government.

The Yemen war has been in military stalemate for years.

Houthi leader Abdel-Malek al-Houthi said that events in Aden showed the coalition was in crisis and that Hadi was powerless, Reuters reported.

In a brief statement posted on Twitter, Yemen's Information Minister Muammar Iryani confirmed that forces of the presidential troops had received a number of government offices and institutions after the STC's withdrawal.

A Houthi military spokesman said earlier that the group had targeted the Shaybah oilfield with 10 drones, in what he said was the "biggest attack in the depths" of the kingdom, the world's top oil exporter, by the Iran-aligned group.

It reiterated Arab parliament's solidarity with Saudi Arabia in all measures it takes to protect its security and stability.

The STC has since agreed to a Saudi-brokered ceasefire and welcomed Riyadh's call for dialogue. Hadi's government says it will not attend before separatists reverse what it calls their "coup".

Saturday's terror attack on the Shaybah natural gas field in eastern Saudi Arabia by Houthi militias was roundly condemned by several nations as well as the pan Islamic Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Despite nearly five years of military intervention by the coalition, the Houthi rebels remain in control of the capital Sanaa and much of the more populous north.
