Two things occurred in that game that forced the Seahawks into changing their plans: Lynch played well, and Smith has now been forced to undergo a procedure to remove a cyst from his knee.
Seattle signed former New Orleans Saints quarterback J.T. Barrett and added linebacker Juwon Young to their roster. To make room on their 90-man, the team waived linebacker Chris Worley and safety Marwin Evans.
Barrett started 44 games for the Buckeyes, and passed for 9,434 yards along with the aforementioned 104 TDs - with an accuracy rate of 63.5 percent - while also adding 3,263 rushing yards and 43 rushing touchdowns to his resume.
With that in mind, the Seahawks added Barrett, who signed with New Orleans as an undrafted free agent previous year, spending most of the season on the Saints' practice squad.
Evans, who previously played for Green Bay, was signed to Seattle's practice squad late last season, then later signed to a reserve/future contract following the end of the season.
Smith has looked like the better quarterback for the majority of training camp, leading most to believe he will be the backup once the season starts.
However, with both Lynch and Smith's struggles in training camp, and of course the possibility that Smith's injures lingers, Barrett has a chance to win a roster spot with Seattle if he can outplay them in the team's final few training camp games. Barrett also rushed for 798 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior.
He will compete with Smith and Paxton Lynch for the backup job behind Russell Wilson. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Smith will miss at least a week of action, leaving the team light at quarterback heading into their preseason matchup with the Vikings next Sunday. In case he's not, Barrett will have a week of practice to get up to speed in Seattle's offense.
