'The biggest tragedy possible' - Bjorg Lambrecht dies after Tour of Poland crash

The Lotto Soudal team confirmed on Monday that promising young Belgian cyclist Bjorg Lambrecht has died in hospital in the Polish city of Rybnik following a crash during stage 3 of the Tour of Poland race. No other rider was reportedly involved.

Race doctor Ryszard Wisniewski was quoted as saying "we don't know why he fell, it was on a totally flat road".

Belgian rider Bjorg Lambrecht was killed in a crash at the Tour of Poland on Monday.

"He was taken to hospital by ambulance". "More reanimation was done on the way to the hospital, but he died during the operation there in the hospital", Wisniewski said. Apparently the Tour de Pologne will continue, although if so, the massive tragedy will hang over the event until after the last stage.

This was Lambrecht's second season with the WorldTour and was considered one of Belgium's most promising young cyclists.

In 2017 he had finished first in the Under-23s version of the prestigious Liege-Bastogne-Liege race.

Lambrecht finished second at the Under-23 World Championships a year ago and was regarded as one of his country's most promising young riders.

Unclear what caused the crash - some say weather may have been a factor because it had been raining.

"I was devastated to hear today's tragic news and I would like to personally send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Bjorg Lambrecht and everyone at Lotto-Soudal".
