Tiger Woods jumps up leaderboard, shoots 5-under 67 — BMW Championship

Justin Thomas took command of the BMW Championship with a superb 11-under 61 to shatter the Medinah course record and open up a six-stroke lead heading into the final round. Thomas could be in line to become just the second two-time FedEx Cup victor if he keeps this form going through next week at the TOUR Championship. "One of those days".

Justin Thomas set a new course record in the third round as he stormed to the top of the BMW Championship leaderboard.

"I just hope the trend doesn't continue and someone else breaks it tomorrow", Thomas said.

Thomas posted a 21-under 195 total in the penultimate event of the PGA Tour season, while compatriots Tony Finau and Patrick Cantlay fired 68s for a share of second place on 15-under.

Thomas hit 5-wood to 2 feet for an eagle on No. 10, holed out from 180 yards with an 8-iron on No. 16 and eight birdies.

And he wasn't done. Thomas beat that by two.

Thomas followed up that eagle with another birdie on No. 17. There will be a later discretionary selection of four players for each team from those who did not automatically qualify. "That's a little bit of a bonus".

Thomas started his round with five successive birdies, and later recorded a tap-in eagle at the par-five 10th after a precise five-wood approach shot.

"I shoot 60, it should be all right", Woods said, a tongue-in-cheek comment made about the time Thomas was teeing off. "I was so pumped up".

Thomas rolled the ball past the cup on a 29-foot birdie putt at the par-4 18th then sank his four-footer for par to close a spectacular performance.

"I'm very lucky that I had a couple to choose from today", Thomas said. "I'm going to have to have another good round and see if we can make some history".

Tiger Woods needed a low number, and he got it during Round 3 at the BMW Championship.

Brandt Snedeker (67) highlights a trio of golfers tied for sixth (12 under) and Rickie Fowler (68), Kevin Kisner (69), Xander Schauffele (70) and Matsuyama (73) all sit ninth.

Scott McCarron was tied for second after a 66.

Woods may not need the money, but is nonetheless disappointed not to get a chance to return to the scene of one of the most memorable victories of his career.

Brandt Snedeker made two incredible chip shots for birdies on par-3 holes, holing out a 35-yarder from deep rough at 13 and blasting out of a greenside bunker from 60 feet and rolling the ball into the cup at 17.
