Facebook Rolls Out Face Recognition Feature, Kills Tagging Option

In 2017 they started to call it "face recognition" and added the ability to manage "whether Facebook uses face recognition technology on photos of you in order suggest tags".

Tag Suggestions, which used face recognition only to suggest a user tag friends in photos, has been at the centre of a privacy-related lawsuit since 2015.

People who opt in to the new setting will still have tag suggestions automatically generated about them. "This means that you'll still be able to be tagged in photos, but we won't suggest tags based on a face recognition template". The notice will also include a button to turn the feature on or off, and Facebook says it will not enable face recognition by default for folks who are just getting it and don't elect to participate. "If you do not now have the face recognition setting and do nothing, we will not use face recognition to recognise you or suggest tags", said the social media giant. Subsequently, the users who don't see the notice or ignore the provided options will have the feature turned "off" by default until they decide to modify their preferences through the settings menu.

If you don't now have the facial-identification tool on and do nothing, Facebook won't use facial recognition to identify you or suggest tags. The default "tag suggestions" feature will now be rolled back.

Now, and only if you choose to opt-in to Facebook's face recognition option, Facebook will offer you suggestions for photos you may be in.

Some Facebook users previously had access to two Facebook face recognition tools.

The changes are now in effect all over the world, and some users with specific settings will start seeing prompts to decide in to face acknowledgment beginning today. And the company said it doesn't sell its technology or share your face-recognition information with third parties. The company stated it's providing users with more "opportunity to review information about our technology and the features it powers so you can make the choice that's right for you". There's also increasing concern about the use of facial recognition at airports, which critics worry will normalize the technology and socialize people to accept it.
