GM, UAW Exchange Barbs as Strike Costs Mount

Rabas hopes the labor dispute can be resolved quickly between the UAW and GM because the strike is slowly crippling his business operation.

In the talks, a person briefed on them said bargainers are haggling about wages and profit sharing, new product for factories that GM wants to close, a faster route to full wages for new hires, and use of temporary workers.

Jammie Lane works for Hyundai.

"They have to kind of follow along with some of the items or else, if there's too much disparity than workers at those places will go union", Borchers said.

"The automotive industry is strong".

"We've been off all week but we've been up there every day because that's our livelihood, and we're fighting for what is right", Robertson said.

A strike by 49,000 members of the United Auto Workers union against General Motors continues for the second week, and it's unclear when it will come to a stop. When they're on the job, most workers get about $30 per hour in wages, or roughly $1,200 per week.

The UAW strike has stretched to day 9.

Still, Burgoon said, "There are only so many units and once the units run out the strike impact really takes hold".

UAW representatives were continuing their talks with GM as of Monday, but no agreements had been reached.

A spokesperson for GM did not immediately return a request for comment.

"All across this country, working people are sick and exhausted of working two or three jobs (and see) their health care benefits go down and their wages go down (while) seeing the CEOs get huge compensation packages", he said.

The UAW contract technically forbids plant closings, but GM has shut down plants and cut jobs with impunity.

DETROIT, MI - SEPTEMBER 25: Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. She says it's time for the state to be active in protecting workers.

At GM's Fairfax Assembly & Stamping Plant, around 2,000 members have been on strike since last Monday.

UAW spokesman Brian Rothenberg says the union is committed to conducting strike-related activities safely and lawfully and is working with law enforcement as issues arise.

As many as nine UAW members have been arrested for blocking traffic into and out of the Spring Hill plant, according to news reports and social media posts.

A UAW white paper from the spring of this year lays out the stakes of the move from combustion to electric engines in stark terms: EVs require fewer parts and fewer jobs to manufacture and numerous parts are now supplied by non-union companies or are imported.
