HK activists take cause to US Congress, urge pressure on Beijing

Activists involved in the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong appealed to US lawmakers Tuesday to support their fight by banning the export of American police equipment that is used against demonstrators and by more closely monitoring Chinese efforts to undermine civil liberties in the city.

Lam said not all Hong Kong citizens support the protesters' demands and reiterated that the government can not condone violence.

Closing week the U.N. Human Rights Price heard from two Hong Kong businesswomen, Pansy Ho Chiu-king and Anni Wu Suk-ching, who defended the authorities's response to the instruct circulation and accused the protesters of inflicting the total violence.

At a press briefing yesterday, Lam confirmed that the government had approached PR companies, but had been advised that "the time is not right" to rebuild the image of Hong Kong.

"Why is China sitting right here, as a member of this Human Rights Council?" This is a plea for democracy, ' she told a congressional commission in Washington.

"At one point in time, we did have that idea of approaching some global PR firms to provide some advice", she told a press conference on Tuesday.

As China's flag rises over the territory to the strains of the national anthem, some citizens are likely to boo - as they did when the anthem played at a World Cup qualifying soccer match last week - or sing the ballad of their protest movement, "Glory to Hong Kong".

The hospital rally came after a pro-democracy march on Sunday in downtown Hong Kong descended into chaos.

Leader of Hong Kong Carrie Lam said yesterday she and her team would begin dialogue sessions with the community next week, while reiterating that the violence that has roiled the city must end.

Hundreds of protesters later targeted the government office complex, throwing bricks and gasoline bombs through police barriers. They include several young people who have emerged as prominent figures in a leaderless movement. Hong Kong media reported that groups of pro-Beijing supporters had attacked journalists. "The stakes have never been higher", he said.

"By collapsing the boundary between the Chinese Communist Party and Xi Jinping himself, Xi has gotten himself into a very messy situation with regards to Hong Kong".

The objectives of the campaign are to "address negative perceptions in key markets overseas to maintain confidence in Hong Kong", and to "underscore the strengths and attributes that differentiate Hong Kong from other cities in the region and bring out the success of "one country, two systems".

"That deadline is closer to us than it appears; there's no return", Wong said.

In July, China received $5.28 billion foreign direct investment inflows from Hong Kong, a slight fall from $5.35 billion in July 2018, while in June that coincided with the start of the protests, flows from Hong Kong to China stood at $12.19 billion, a modest rise from $11.85 billion a year earlier.

He said he hopes the Donald Trump administration will follow the lead of Congress and speak more forcefully in support of the protesters. Chan said police, who have called protesters cockroaches, were carrying out "pest control to curb free speech".

USA lawmakers are considering passing legislation that would sanction Chinese officials responsible for abducting or extraditing anyone from Hong Kong to the mainland.

Riot police, armored vehicles and trucks with water cannons have been deployed with tear gas and rubber bullets fired at rowdy mobs on multiple occasions over the past three months.

'Thank you for your courage and bravery. "But here we are, in the 15th week [of protests], we can't see much of an ability to solve [the puzzle]", said Ho.
