Hurricane Dorian 'extremely dangerous' - but could yet spare Florida

The National Hurricane Center in Miami says maximum sustained winds of the powerful Category 4 storm increased Saturday morning to 150 miles per hour (240 kph) from 145 miles per hour (230 kph).

The hurricane's exact path once it hits the U.S. remains uncertain, but the storm could make landfall Monday or early Tuesday along southeastern Florida.

As of Friday morning, Dorian was centered about 255 miles (410 kilometers) northeast of the Bahamas.

Dorian is an "extremely dangerous" storm that "poses a significant threat to Florida and the Northwestern Bahamas", the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory.

Hurricane Dorian has intensified to a unsafe Category 3 storm on Friday according to the National Hurricane Center.

The storm was expected to produce 10 to 15 inches of rain, with isolated areas receiving as 20 inches in the northwestern Bahamas.

Hurricane Dorian spun west across the Atlantic ocean toward Florida on Saturday after growing into an even stronger Category 4 storm as residents and visitors hunkered down in one of America's most popular tourist destinations.

"Do not be foolish and try to fearless out this hurricane", Minnis said.

NASA is also close by and the United States space agency said it was moving an enormous mobile rocket launcher from a launch pad into a vehicle assembly building to protect it from the storm.

As Dorian barrels towards the island chain on Saturday, a hurricane warning has been issued in areas in northwest Bahamas, according to an alert issued by the Bahamas Department of Meteorology on Friday. "The price you may pay for not evacuating is your life or other serious physical harm".

Two high pressure systems could pin Dorian between them as it nears the coast or gets on shore and that could create a situation similar to what happened when Hurricane Harvey stalled over Texas bringing record rainfall, said Rouiller.

The storm will begin to slow down considerably and weaken to a potentially weak Category 4 or a high Category 3 hurricane by Monday night, Shackelford said.

"I just filled up my auto with gas and will fill the bathtub with water", she said, "but I'm not going to put up hurricane shutters until I'm sure we're getting a direct hit".

Most were coming from Sweeting Cay, a fishing town of a few hundred people that sits about 5 feet (1.5 meters) above sea level and was expected to be left completely underwater by storm surge.

Although Campbell has since deleted her original tweet, she later defended her words, connecting her animus for Trump and desire that Mar-a-Lago is destroyed to the president's environmental policy, which does not prioritize the climate change agenda.

Also imperiled were the Bahamas, with Dorian's expected track running just to the north of Great Abaco and Grand Bahama islands.

"There is still substantial middle- and upper-level dry air on the south side of the hurricane, as shown by tonight's G-IV mission, which has been allowing only slow strengthening during the day".

Major cruise lines Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian have started rerouting ships. "Do not wait until it is too late to make a plan", he added.

Dorian was expected to move over the Atlantic "well north of the southeastern and central Bahamas" Saturday, and to be near or over the northwestern Bahamas on Sunday.
