According to the Kansas City Star, the Jayhawks will soon be hit by "multiple major violations" from the NCAA, casting a large shadow over the upcoming season.
Preston never played a game for Kansas, while De Sousa was suspended for the entire 2018-19 season. Former Adidas employee TJ Gassnola testified in federal court past year that he made payments on behalf of Adidas to the mother of former KU player Billy Preston and the guardian to player Silvio DeSousa.
"Due to member-created rules, we can not comment on current, pending or potential investigations", NCAA director of public and media relations Stacey Osburn told The Star in an email.
According to Jesse Newell and Steve Vockrodt of the Kansas City Star, the imminent notice will allege "multiple major violations" in the men's basketball program. If the NCAA alleges level 1 violations, Kansas would be subject to the most severe punishments, including postseason bans and a loss of scholarships.
While Kansas coach Bill Self was not implicated by the FBI in their investigation of Kansas, a former Adidas employee that was in contact with Self and assistant coach Kurtis Townsend plead guilty to sending money to the families of two Kansas players, and that could lead to the organization punishing Self, Townsend, and Kansas basketball. Gassnola also said he agreed to pay $20,000 to Fenny Falmagne, the guardian of De Sousa, to help Falmagne exit an agreement to send De Sousa to Maryland, an Under Armour school.
North Carolina State on July 10 received a notice of allegations that included two Level 1 violations.
