North Korea fires 'projectiles' after offering talks with US

North Korea offered Monday to restart stalled nuclear negotiations with the USA later this month but warned "dealings may come to an end" if the Americans don't bring something new to the table.

The two countries began a historic dialogue after President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un held a summit in Singapore in June 2018.

North Korea fired off two "unidentified projectiles" from the country's west, toward the Sea of Japan on Tuesday, the South Korean military said, just hours after the nation offered to resume nuclear talks with the United States and a day ahead of a key Cabinet reshuffle in Japan.

Trump and Kim agreed then to restart functioning-stage negotiations for denuclearisation talks that had stalled due to the fact an unsuccessful second summit among Trump and Kim in Hanoi in February.

"We call on North Korean to instantly stop such acts that heighten tensions".

Choe said she hopes the United States will bring "a proposal geared to the interests of the DPRK and the USA and based on decision methods acceptable to us".

In Washington, a senior USA government official said it is aware of the latest missile launches and is closely monitoring the situation in cooperation with its allies.

On Aug. 10 and Aug. 16, North Korea also fired projectiles that Seoul's military said were short-range ballistic missiles similar to the US ATACMS.

North Korea has so far avoided the kind of long-range missile tests that in 2017 had Trump and Kim threatening each other with war and trading crude insults.

The US said they had "no meetings to announce at this time".

On Monday night, the North's first vice foreign minister, Choe Son Hui, said North Korea is willing to resume nuclear diplomacy in late September but that Washington must come to the negotiating table with acceptable new proposals.

"Trump has given them a pass on short-range missiles", he said.

North Korea has carried out a series of weapons tests since late July in protest at joint military exercises between Seoul and the US.

Many of them joyfully danced and interacted with North Korean youths.

Meanwhile, Japan has not asked South Korea to share intelligence with regard to the latest firings, though it made such requests right after the North's previous test last month.

"We believe North Korea is upgrading its (missile) technology by repeatedly firing missiles", said Japanese Defence Minister Takeshi Iwaya.

"If we are to succeed, North Korea must set aside its search for obstacles to negotiations and instead seek the opportunities for engagement while that opportunity lasts", he said.

Biegun said in a speech at the University of MI on Friday Washington's aim was to transform relations with Pyongyang and establish a permanent peace on the Korean peninsula, but stressed that this would require the elimination of weapons of mass destruction.

North Korea has earlier explained its improvement of new weapons is to counter armed forces threats and offensive pressures against its individual protection.
