Serena survives scare against 17-year-old in US Open

23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams sailed through to the round of 16 of the US Open for the 18th time in her career after a straight-set victory over rising Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic on Friday.

Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam victor and last year's runner-up, found herself staring down the barrel of a major upset against her fellow American.

But Williams, whose earliest U.S. Open exit came in her 1997 debut when she lost in the third round, turned the match around when she finally broke McNally's serve and then consolidated in a tight service game for a 5-2 lead in the second set.

"I think that's huge", McNally said after her 5-7 6-3 6-1 second-round loss to Williams on Wednesday. I knew what she could do. That sounds scripted - actually, I'd rather not be tested in every match.

Serena will next face the victor of the other women's singles match between Dayana Yastremska and Karolina Muchova.

"I managed to play nearly pain free, that's a big improvement from my last match", said top seed Djokovic. "Had some chances", said McNally.

Serena Williams will face Karolina Muchova in the 3rd Round of US Open 2019 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Williams praised McNally: "It was definitely something to get used to".

The 37-year-old Williams faced an opponent she had not played before and was visibly and audibly engaged in the contest from the start but needed until the seventh game to break when Muchova fired long. I'm hoping that with proper medical help and treatments, I'll be able to get myself in a better state than I was today.

"I survived tonight. I'm not too pleased with the way I played at all".

"I was also lucky to find my way back in the second set and to win in straight sets", Djokovic added.

Williams opened the third set with a break on the way to a 4-0 edge and cruised home from there.

She is set to face Petra Martic in the Round of 16 who is coming into the match on the back of a win against Anastasija Sevastova from Latvia 6-4, 6-3. "She had absolutely nothing to lose and she played like it".

Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, Ashleigh Barty, and Elina Svitolina advanced Thursday to the third round of the U.S. Open 2019 in NY.
