Trump says hopes India, Pakistan can come together on Kashmir

He was speaking at a Question-Answer session at the Council on Foreign Relations as a special guest in NY on Monday.

US President Donald Trump on Monday once again said he would be willing to mediate on the Kashmir issue if both Pakistan and India want Washington's help.

He said the worldwide community should play a due role in resolution of the longstanding issue of Jammu and Kashmir. I said it's good because if they do, they'll not be able to go back to Pakistan.

He said the world should intervene to resolve the situation.

Donald Trump (right) met Imran Khan in NY. India doesn't and has said so unambiguously.

Khan, a former cricket star who has long criticized military operations against extremists, discounted the possibility that the Taliban would topple the internationally recognized government in Kabul without USA troops.

He also made it clear that we will allow no terrorist group on our soil.

"Look, there is not going to be a military solution".

Referring to issue of Afghanistan, he said stability is need of the hour in the war torn country.

He had himself accused Pakistan of lies and deceit in a New Year's tweet in 2018, for not doing enough to combat terrorism despite receiving billions in support from the United States.

Tagging PM Modi's comments on Pakistan at Houston yesterday as "very aggressive", President Trump said it was "well received" by the 50,000-strong crowd. "70,000 Pakistanis died in this".

The leaders spoke about regional issues, including tensions with Iran and peace efforts in Afghanistan.

Appreciating the political wisdom and acumen of Imran Khan, he said he trusts Pakistan and Prime Minister Imran Khan. "China has given us a great opportunity to lift ourselves up from where we are right now", he added.

Prime minister Imran Khan on Monday took a jibe at golf players, saying it is a piece of cake whereas cricket develops a person's character. Khan said Pakistan "committed one of the biggest blunders" when it joined the U.S. war on terror after the 9/11 terror attacks by the al-Qaida.
