Trump shows apparently altered map of Hurricane Dorian hitting Alabama

In a White House video released Wednesday, Trump displays a modified National Hurricane Center "Cone of Uncertainty" forecast, dated from 11 a.m. on August 29, indicating Alabama would in fact be impacted.

Just 20 minutes later, the National Weather Service in Birmingham, Alabama, tweeted: "Alabama will NOT see any impacts from #Dorian".

After facing ridicule for suggesting over the weekend that Hurricane Dorian might strike Alabama, Donald Trump showed reporters a map on Wednesday that appeared to attempt to prove his point.

According to Mersereau, citing a USA statute, "It is a violation of federal law to falsify a National Weather Service forecast and pass it off as official, as President Trump did here".

He claimed that Alabama along with Georgia was going to be hit "very hard" in those models along with the state of Florida, until the hurricane took a right turn and moved off away from the Gulf Coast. Conditions will worsen the farther east you go from Richmond, with flooding and damaging winds likely across far southeast Virginia.

When news organizations noted the president's error, the Republican was outraged, but the story soon faded - which made sense, given that there was a deadly storm approaching, and Trump's focus was supposed to be on preparing for a disaster, not petty concerns over his personal pride.

The Oval Office briefing started innocently enough, with Trump alerting reporters to the fact that he and his team wanted to give an update on storm preparations.

On the map, a black circle that had apparently been drawn with a marker connected the state to areas off the coast that were projected to be hit by the storm.

"We'll see the severity of the storm and we'll see how many people we're talking about, but I think we have a much better idea about establishing these mega shelters, we've even talked to the Friday center again, there's potential we could do that like we did last time". Because in this crudely manipulated image, Alabama was at risk. Bill Kristol, director of Defending Democracy Together and a conservative critic of Trump, posted sarcastically: "Who among us hasn't altered a National Hurricane Center forecast with a Sharpie?"

At a separate event on opiods, Trump added.

'No, I just know that Alabama was in the original forecast, ' he said of the amended map.

Altering official government weather forecasts is against the law.
