1st T20I: Depleted Sri Lanka shock Pakistan despite Hasnain hat-trick

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain on Saturday became the youngest bowler in cricket history to claim a T20I hat trick.

At 19 years and 183 days, Hasnain bowled with a lot of fire and plenty and achieved the feat in the first Twenty20 worldwide against Sri Lanka at the Gaddaffi Stadium in Lahore.

In the last two years, Sri Lanka have lost 15 out of 21 T20I matches played in the period, while in contrast Pakistan have registered 21 victories from 26 games. We had great belief in this team. "The bowlers also started well".

Pakistan have a world number one ranked Twenty20 batsman in Babar Azam, while the recall of Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal further boosts their batting. They put on an opening stand of 84 runs before Gunathilaka was dismissed for a well compiled 57 runs.

When Babar Azam struck a couple of sweetly timed boundaries to kick-start the chase, it seemed the theme of Pakistan dominance, but a double-strike from Nuwan Pradeep changed the complexion of the contest. Then their skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed and Ifthikhar Ahmed batted with caution and added 46 runs before Ifthikhar Ahmed was run out for 25 runs off 24 deliveries.

"Sri Lanka played better than us and that's why we were wary of them", admitted Sarfaraz.

Sri Lanka will miss their top players Kusal Perera, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya De Silva, Thisara Perera and Niroshan Dickwella, who were among ten players who refused to tour Pakistan over security fears.

Playing just his second T20I, the Pakistani tearaway showed just why he's held in such high regard, taking three wickets in three balls across two spells. He began briskly to hit two sixes and two fours to score 32 runs off 22 balls. He struck eight fours and a six in his 38-ball knock before becoming the first wicket to fall, missing a sweep against Shadab Khan and being given LBW.

Ashraf achieved the feat against Sri Lanka two years ago.

Hasnain is the second youngest bowler to register a hat-trick in men's global cricket (Tests, ODIs, T20Is).
