Arsenal players want Granit Xhaka to continue as club captain

Unai Emery has confirmed that Calum Chambers, David Luiz, Granit Xhaka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will sit out, but Arsenal's team could have a strong look with Hector Bellerin, Rob Holding, Lucas Torreira, Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette in the travelling squad.

Meanwhile, he has not been the only player causing a rift in north London, with club captain Granit Xhaka jeered as he was replaced during a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Arsenal don't have immediate plans to get rid of the Spaniard, but it's a testing period for the 47-year-old who has been criticised for his tactics and lack of leadership in certain situations.

The Gunners manager said he did not want to speak about whether Xhaka may lose the captaincy. "He trained normally with the group but he is devastated".

'His behaviour was flawless in training, with the group and club. He knows he was wrong.

This comes as pressure seems to be mounting on Emery after inconsistent performances. It's normal as a human.

Emery had called for Xhaka to apologise for his actions immediately after the game at the Emirates, saying: 'Yes [he should apologise].

"For instance, our dialog this morning was as a result of I wished to take heed to him about how he's pondering now to assist us and be with us tomorrow".

"He's actually played more games for Arsenal since he joined the club than anyone".

"I don't need his apology". My ideal future is to watch again Xhaka playing and every supporter supporting him.

"I think it might be hard for him to continue as captain now because of what happened", the Liverpool legend said on Sky Sports.

While Xhaka is understood to be out for Wednesday night's EFL Cup clash with Liverpool at Anfield, a number of first-team players were anyway going to be rested for that match.
