Biden Denied Communion at South Carolina Church Due to Stance On Abortion

Former Vice President Joe Biden, a candidate for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 presidential race, was denied Holy Communion on Sunday morning at a Florence church.

In 2012, Bishop Michael Sheridan of the Diocese of Colorado Springs reportedly told the Gazette-Telegraph that if Biden happened to attend his Mass while touring during then-President Barack Obama's reelection campaign, "He should know, and I would do everything I could do to make sure that he knows, he ought not to be receiving Communion".

Father Robert Morey of Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Florence confirmed October 28 that he denied the communion to Biden, who has been Catholic his whole life, on Sunday morning. "Our actions should reflect that", Morey said in an email to the newspaper.

Canon church law states a priest must refuse communion to any person who publicly lives a life of sin without repentance, which includes supporting abortion.

A Biden spokesperson refused to confirm or deny whether the lifelong Catholic attended Saint Anthony on Sunday, but the Associated Press reported that the candidate was campaigning in sc over the weekend.

Biden, a lifelong Catholic, had attended the church's 9 a.m.

Denial of communion to politicians who publicly support abortion has always been a hot-button topic.

This is a local news story that was pointed out to me by a friend: "Joe Biden denied Holy Communion at Florence church".

Biden's stance on abortion has for decades been aligned with the more conservative wing of the Democratic party - but earlier this year he announced his opposition of the Hyde Amendment, a ban on federal funding for abortions. As "a priest, it is my responsibility to minister to those souls entrusted to my care, and I must do so even in the most hard situations", Fr. Robert Morey of Saint Anthony Catholic Church told the Morning News via email.

"There's been a grassroots response out there to the fact that Trump has gone out and made a decision to not only ask the Russians and the Chinese to get involved in making sure I'm not the nominee, but he has-his folks are spending an very bad lot of money", Biden said.

Biden has said he would seek to codify Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that established women's abortion rights nationwide - a move that could protect that right from mounting legal challenges from Republican-led states.
