Essex lorry deaths: Man due in court over 39 deaths

United Kingdom police in Essex say all of the 39 victims found dead in a truck container in southeastern England are now out of the truck and in a mortuary awaiting autopsies.

The 25-year-old from Northern Ireland, who also faces charges of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration and money laundering, will appear in court on Monday.

In the early hours of October 23, Essex Police were summoned to the scene at Waterglade Industrial Park, Eastern Avenue, Grays in the United Kingdom after the bodies were discovered in the truck.

Human rights activist Hoa Nghiem, from Human Rights Space, based in Vietnam, wrote on Twitter: "Her family is looking for help to identify their daughter among 39 people".

Officers had earlier also arrested a man and woman from Warrington, both 38 years old, on suspicion of 39 counts of manslaughter and people trafficking.

A Warrington man and woman arrested in connection with the deaths of 39 people, found in the back of a lorry in Essex have been released on bail.

Detective Chief Inspector Martin Pasmore told reporters on Saturday the ambassador had visited the civic centre in Grays to pay tribute to the victims.

Whilst emphasising that he could not confirm the nationality of any victim, Mr Pasmore said information had been flowing into the casualty bureau at Essex Police from the Vietnamese community in the United Kingdom and overseas.

Bui Thi Nhung's mother and sister believe the teenager paid thousands of pounds to travel to the United Kingdom from the village of Yen Thanh in north-central Vietnam in the hope of finding work in a nail bar.

All three are being held on suspicion of conspiracy to traffic people and on suspicion of manslaughter.

The woman's father, Pham Van Thin, told CNN: "The smugglers said that this was a. safe route, that people would go by aeroplane, car. if I had known she would go by this route, I would not have let her go". Irish police did not issue any statement about the arrest.

Police have charged the driver of the truck, Maurice Robinson, with 39 counts of manslaughter and conspiracy to traffic people.

"Dear Mom, I'm very sorry, mom and dad".

"If you come to us, we will do all we can to put our arm around you and take you through this process, and establish as quickly as possible whether or not we have your loved involved in this tragic incident, and try and reunite you. Mom, I am so sorry, Mom". I'm dying because I can't breathe ...

In Vietnam, Nguyen Dinh Gia, the father of 20-year-old Nguyen Dinh Luong, feared his son was among the container victims.

Mr Pham also told CNN that smugglers said the crossing was "a safe route" and that people would go by plane or auto.

Officers have so far collected more than 500 exhibits including mobile phones, and each of the victims is believed to have had a bag of some description, clothes and other belongings.

It's understood that the vehicle entered the United Kingdom via Holyhead in Wales, but that the trailer arrived separately into Purfleet, Essex from Zeebrugge in Belgium.

Belgian officials said the trailer arrived at Zeebrugge at 2.49pm on Tuesday and left the port the same day en route to Purfleet.

The Northern Ireland man has been bailed until November 13. The truck and container left the port about 30 minutes later, apparently for Grays Industrial Estate where the bodies were discovered and police alerted.
