Fired teacher who wouldn't use trans student's pronouns sues

A Virginia teacher who was sacked past year for refusing to to refer to a transgender student by male pronouns is now suing the school board that unanimously voted to terminate him.

"Mr Vlaming believes both as a matter of human anatomy and religious conviction that sex is biologically fixed in each person and can not be changed regardless of a person's feelings or desires", it says. The transgender scholar appeared about to crash when the instructor instructed one other scholar to assist their classmate.

PETER Vlaming was supervising students during an activity previous year when he yelled out, "Don't let her hit the wall!"

Vlaming, meanwhile, said in a statement he was upset by the school's handling of the situation.

He said in the lawsuit he was reprimanded by school officials, suspended, and ultimately fired by the school board over ongoing conflicts about the student's pronouns. "Mr. Vlaming's conscience and religious practice prohibits him from intentionally lying, and he sincerely believes that referring to a female student as a male by using an objectively male pronoun is telling a lie".

Vlaming, who taught at the school since 2012, was sacked in December 2018 after the West Point School Board unanimously voted to terminate his contract. West Point College Board, in Circuit Court for the County of King William (VA). He always calls his students on the names they prefer to be called. Last fall, a professor at Shawnee State University in OH said he was "formally charged" for his opposition. The Trump administration has rolled again protections for transgender folks in colleges, within the army and in well being care.

At the hearing, West Point High School principal Jonathan Hochman said that Vlaming told him that he liked and missed 'the female version of the student'.

Vlaming's legal battle began in the summer of 2018, after the student at his rural high school, about 40 miles east of Richmond, came out as transgender. School officials added that he was already warned to comply with school regulations on gender issues, though the incident was the first time the teacher used the incorrect pronoun in front of the student, it also served as his last.

West Point High School in Virginia. He consistently used the student's preferred male name and attempted to avoid the use of any pronouns at all, his lawsuit says.

"West Point Public Schools' primary focus is on students, staff, and instruction, and we will continue to direct our energy toward maintaining a high-quality learning environment in our schools", the spokesperson said.

Citing insurance policies in opposition to making a hostile studying surroundings, directors finally instructed Vlaming that he would face disciplinary motion if he didn't comply. One day after the Halloween incident, on November 1, 2018, he was suspended by the superintendent for failing to do so.

'I am also aware of, and agree, with speech limits that are placed on public school teachers, concerning matters of religious faith.

Shortly after Vlaming's firing, Superintendent Laura Abel told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that the student's parents felt the teacher's behavior created a "hostile learning environment", adding that the family felt "disrespected". And the student had expressed that.

That didn't satisfy school authorities, who demanded he use male pronouns to refer to the student in all situations, with the Assistant Principal telling him his "personal religious beliefs end at the school door". But the school board disagreed.

As proof of the teacher's compassion towards his students, around 100 students made a solidarity walkout a day after the school board's decision on the Valming incident. "Women are women", the TV station reported.
