Jr. Middleweight Boxer Patrick Day in Coma After Devastating 10th-round KO

The junior middleweight boxer was said to have been dominated throughout his bout with Charles Conwell at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, which led to a devastating left hook 1:46 into the round that left Day unconscious and in need of medical attention.

Day was fitted with a neck brace and oxygen mask before being taken out of the ring on a stretcher and rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

USA sports broadcaster ESPN reported that Day had emergency brain surgery and went into a coma, but did not say whether he fell into the coma or it was induced by the doctors. It's now unclear whether he fell into the state naturally or was medically induced by doctors.

Large sections of the boxing community have expressed their sympathy for Day and his family as he continues to fight in hospital.

Speaking after the fight, 21-year-old American Conwell told IFL TV: "I give my blessings and concerns to him and his team". I know he is a great person'.

"Please pray for Pat!" Get home safe!,' prompting other high-profile figures in the boxing world to send their own well wishes to Day, including the likes of three-time heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis.

Following the scare in the ring, DiBella asked for prayers on Twitter.

Day (17-4-1) is a former WBC continental Americas super welterweight champion who suffered his second consecutive loss after winning six fights in a row from April 2016 to February 2019. He was a 2012 Golden Gloves champion, the 2012 USA Boxing welterweight national champion, and also won the Sugar Ray Robinson Outstanding Athlete award in 2012 while also being an Olympic alternate.
