Judge denies President Trump's request to keep tax returns secret

In yet another effort to pry loose Trump's tax records, California recently passed a law requiring candidates for president or governor to turn over their returns dating back five years, or else they can not appear on the state's primary ballot.

An appeals court has temporarily blocked the release of President Donald Trump's tax returns to NY state investigators.

The subpoena, which covers records from January 2011 through the present, is part of an ongoing probe of the Trump Organization by District Attorney Cy Vance's office.

Vance has been investigating whether Trump broke any NY laws when he reimbursed his former personal attorney Michael Cohen for hush money payments made to two women, Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal, to keep quiet about their alleged affairs during the 2016 election.

Mr. Trump has denied having an affair with Ms. Daniels.

Trump's refusal to publicize his financial data has raised questions, particularly amid reports that the president's longtime creditor, Deutsche Bank, was raided in connection with the Panama Papers money laundering probe and that the president engaged in suspect tax schemes for years before beginning his political career.

The judge said he couldn't accept that legal view, "especially in the light of the fundamental concerns over excessive arrogation of power that animated the constitution's delicate structure and its calibrated balance of authority among the three branches of the national government, as well as between the federal and state authorities". Presidents, their families and businesses are not above the law, the judge wrote.

As it turns out, Trump's team got the appeal filed in no time flat and a judge has already granted an extension.

The judge said it may be Justice Department policy not to prosecute a sitting president, but stressed that the policy derives from Office of Legal Counsel guidance, not established law. The president's lawyers claim the investigation led by Vance, a Democrat, is politically motivated. Mr. Vance has accused the president and his team of trying to run out the clock on the investigation.

In a statement, Trump personal lawyer Jay Sekulow said only that he was pleased by the appeals court stay. "This court should declare it invalid and enjoin its enforcement until the president is no longer in office". The U.S. Department of Justice, which opposed Vance's bid to dismiss Trump's case, declined to comment. Generally speaking, that means allowing investigations to move forward, while holding off indictments and prosecutions until after a president leaves office.

The porn stars said they had affairs with Mr. Trump years before he was a presidential candidate.

Today, the judge in the case threw out the objection from Trump's lawyers.

A federal judge on Monday ruled against Trump's effort to prevent eight years of his tax returns from being turned over to a NY grand jury.

The ruling raises the likelihood that the president's tax returns will be provided in response to the subpoena.

A federal judge has rejected President Donald Trump's challenge to the release of his tax returns for a NY state criminal probe.
