'Richard Jewell' Trailer: Clint Eastwood's Latest Recounts Olympic-Size Injustice

Clint Eastwood's last movie, The Mule, arrived less than a year ago to.well, let's call it a divisive response. In my memory, there were three big news nightmares in the 1990s: OJ Simpson, Richard Jewell, and Bill Clinton's impeachment. On the one hand, Eastwood's a Hollywood legend, an actual icon, and both his work ethic (Eastwood is 89 years young this year) and wildly economic approach to filmmaking are virtually unparalleled by anyone else of the same status.

Jewell, of course, was the security guard who reported finding an explosive device at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but after the bomb went off he quickly went from hero to suspect. The trailer, anyway. How to make room for it? The government is represented in the film by Jon Hamm's federal agent Tom Shaw, who has his eye on Jewell (played by Paul Walter Hauser) right away. Reaching out to independent, anti-establishment attorney Watson Bryant, Jewell staunchly professes his innocence. "You always look at the guy who found the bomb, just like you always look at the guy who found the body", Shaw intones gravely. And definitely the FBI was not acting in good faith-the Justice Department found the FBI tried manipulate Jewell into waiving his constitutional rights though ultimately they found "no intentional violations" in their investigation, which is an interesting splitting of hairs. All the media outlets settled with Jewell except for the Journal-Constitution. "Jewell fits the profile of the lone bomber", she remarks. "You've ruined this man's life!" It also looks to be tailor-made for the Fox News crowd, zeroing in on the eeeevil media and the crooked jerks over at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This time, Eastwood tells another distinctly American story about how an innocent man was vilified by the media.

Richard Jewell opens on December 13.

The harrowing first trailer for Richard Jewell gives a glimpse as the star-studded ensemble, which includes Oscar winners Sam Rockwell as Watson Bryant and Kathy Bates as Richard's mom Bobi as well as Jon Hamm as the lead FBI investigator and Olivia Wilde as Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Kathy Scruggs.
