Trump impeachment inquiry: Defending the president is getting more hard for Republicans

Speaking at a lecture with CNN columnist Fareed Zakaria and former Secretary of State Madeline Albright on October 1, Powell criticized Republicans, calling on the Party to "get a grip on itself".

Powell joined CNN anchor Fareed Zakaria and the first ever female U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright for an October 1 lecture, which gained traction after CNN shared video of the event on its Twitter page over the weekend.

He said that Republicans were "terrified" and concerned that they could lose a primary. I don't know how he is able to accomplish anything with all the obstruction put up by the Democrats, but he is and God willing he will continue.

"They need to get a grip, and when they see things that aren't right they need to say something about it. I was a Republican who worked for George Herbert Walker Bush, and worked for George W. Bush", the former Secretary of State said. He added that he believes "that we should have a strong foreign policy - a strong defense policy - but we have to look out for our people".

At the lecture, Powell also referenced a September incident when Trump appeared to share an altered hurricane weather map that contradicted weather forecasts.

Recalling how the federal government reinforced the president's false claim that a hurricane was due to hit Alabama, Powell said that when he was serving in a presidential administration, someone would have told the commander-in-chief that he had "screwed up". "He put it on top of the meteorological prediction". ".We've got to remember that the Constitution started with 'We the People, ' not 'Me the President'". "This is not the way the country is supposed to run".

As the Democrats drive an impeachment inquiry toward a potential vote by the end of the year, Trump's allies are struggling.

Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) chastised President Donald Trump on Monday for pushing the Ukrainian president to investigate Joe Biden during a July call.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins of ME says "it's not OK" for a president to encourage a foreign state to investigate a political rival.

"George, you really think he was serious about thinking that China's going to investigate the Biden family?"

Trump, who has claimed he did not commit any wrongdoing, fired back at Romney on Sunday.
