Turkish-led forces advance into Syrian border town, fighting rages

The US president's appearance at the Summit comes as evangelical leaders this week criticized Donald Trump's decision to stand down US forces in northern Syria.

Other pictures purported to show them inside the town's neighborhoods, tearing down signs for the Kurdish-allied military force, known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, and commandeering a Humvee the us had supplied to the Kurds.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported that the town, a major target of the Turkish offensive, had yet to be completely taken.

"It will also go toward increased accountability, removal of explosive remnants of war, community security for stabilization assistance, documenting human rights abuses and global humanitarian law violations, and support for survivors of gender-based violence and torture", the statement continued.

While no American forces were wounded, the incident highlights the risks to US troops as Turkey wages an offensive against USA -allied Kurdish militia.

US military officials denied lawmakers' accusations that Washington abandoned USA allies.

"Don't forget they are fighting for their land".

Syria must be freed from foreign military presence, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Saturday. Donald Trump has said quite publically that since Kurds are fighting for their own land and didn't come to United States aid during World War II, the U.S. has no obligation to help them.

Turkey's Defence Ministry said its forces did not open fire at the US base and took all precautions to prevent any harm to it while it was responding to fire from a nearby area by the Kurdish YPG militia, which Ankara regards as a terrorist group.

"Trump has helped Turkey kill us", said Lava Ibrahim, 24, as a parade of protesters swirled around her holding posters, chanting "Save the Kurds", and waving red, green, and yellow Kurdish flags. "You wouldn't believe how the military-industrial complex came down on me".

The Kurdish-led administration in Syria's northeast said almost 200,000 people had been uprooted so far by the fighting, while the U.N. World Food Programme put the figure at more than 100,000 in the towns of Tel Abyad and Ras al Ain. Turkish artillery continued to shell parts of the town, a Reuters reporter said.

The Netherlands and Norway have also frozen their arms sales to Turkey in response.

Earlier Saturday, Turkish troops moved to seize control of key highways in northeastern Syria, the Turkish military and the Observatory said.

He said Turkey had returned fire on Friday after Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) shelled a Turkish border police station from hills located one kilometre away from the United States observation post in Syria.

Turkey has the largest refugee population in the world, and the presence of Syrians in the country has increasingly led to animosity from Turks who blame them for crime, unemployment and the dilution of Turkish culture.

Turkish-backed Syrian rebels mass outside the border town of Ras al-Ayn during their assault on Kurdish-held border towns in northeastern Syria.

Milley, speaking Friday at the Pentagon shortly before the incident outside Kobane, said the Turkish military "is fully aware, down to explicit grid coordinate detail" of the location of USA troops in Syria.

Reuters is reporting that the explosion happened near a US military outpost near Kobane, Syria, but that no USA personnel were reported injured.

The foreign minister added that Turkish claims are just attempts to hide those facts, and that Arab people look forward to a strong Arab stance that rejects the aggression and to measures that ensure the territorial integrity of Syria, the protection of its people and the alleviation of their suffering.
