Vaping Outbreak Death Toll Climbs to More Than 2 Dozen

Two more deaths in IN are linked to vaping-related illness according to a news release from the state health department. State public health officials have logged 29 deaths in 22 states.

US health officials said on Friday there may be more than one cause for the outbreak of the illness and said they do not see a meaningful drop in the number of new cases.

Nearly all those patients have been hospitalized and at least 26 people have died from the disease as of Tuesday, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, the ISDH said some individuals have reported vaping only nicotine.

Dr. Ned Sharpless, acting commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, said the agency has begun testing on more than 700 product samples and product parts gathered from patients and health officials. E-cigarettes are not FDA approved as a smoking cessation device.

The CDC said they recommend people do not use the vaping products, particularly those containing THC, while they investigate.

The health department said some have reported vaping marijuana with other substances.

The Centers for Disease and Prevention on Thursday said 219 cases were reported in the past week.

Michigan's vaping-related lung injury cases have all been in the lower peninsula and have been to people ranging from 16 to 67 years old.

Approximately 70 percent of reported patients are male, according to the CDC.

"Specifically, patients might not always know what substances they use or might be hesitant to reveal use of substances that are not legal in their state".

The Connecticut Department of Public Health is reporting six more Connecticut residents who were ill with lung injuries possibly related to using e-cigarettes or vaping. Roughly 80 percent are younger than 35 years old with 15 percent younger than 18 years and 21 percent between 18-20 years old.

Only 13% said they had exclusively used nicotine-containing products with no THC. 49 people report suffering from vaping related illnesses in Tennessee.

A report published by the Mayo Clinic earlier this month found that inhaling toxic chemical fumes may be the cause of these cases.
