800 mammoth bones unearthed in Mexico

Mexican archeologists have discovered a trove of 15,000-year-old mammoth skeletons, completely changing previous assumptions about how early humans interacted with the giant creature. The walls of the pits are about 5.6 feet deep and each measures 82 feet in diameter, according to Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

"[The discovery] represents a turning point, a touchstone on what until now we imagined was the interaction of hunter-gatherer bands with these enormous herbivores", INAH National Archeology Coordinator Pedro Francisco Sánchez said in a release Wednesday.

It was previously thought that early humans could only killed mammoths that had been trapped or hurt. He had several wound marks, which led researchers to believe that this mammoth was hunted repeatedly over time.

"There was little evidence before that hunters attacked mammoths". Once the animal was trapped, it would be killed and eaten, with most parts of its body used for something. Over 10 months, archaeologists exhumed 824 bones - corresponding to 14 animals - from the two tusker traps.

After finally achieving their goal, they arranged its bones in a symbolic formation. Remains of two other species that disappeared in the Americas - a horse and a camel - were also found.

The land where the ancient pits and trapped mammoths were found is located in the neighborhood of Tultepec, a few miles north of Mexico City.

Archaeologists tour the area in Tultepec, Mexico, where they found the bones of mammoths.

To this day, the station has a mammoth as its logo in the pictorial system created to help passengers who couldn't read get around the metro.
