Current situation in Kashmir not good: German Chancellor Angela Merkel

"As many as 20,000 Indian nationals are studying in Germany and we would like to see more", Merkel said.

After the meeting, the prime minister would host a dinner for Chancellor Markel.

The conditions in which the people of occupied Kashmir are living are unsustainable and must be improved, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters accompanying her on a trip to New Delhi where she is holding talks with India's prime minister.

Merkel asserted that German investments need some new regulations and a new momentum as regards to India to European Union for trade purposes.

Indian officials say that the developments in IoK is not on the agenda of her visit.

Merkel also said, "While "economic relations" have increased, Merkel said they could be "intensified even more", while referring to the fast-track mechanism".

What were the key points of discussion?

The two leaders stressed the importance of the combined effort of all countries to fight global terrorism and to send out a consistent message that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is not acceptable.

Both sides also expressed their intent to work together to foster, encourage and develop cooperation on Artificial Intelligence technologies and thereby promote innovation and sustainable development.

Merkel said Germany will spend one billion euros in the next five years on green urban mobility projects conceived under the new German-Indian partnership. Modi said the two countries would also bolster ties to combat "terrorism and extremism".

The two leaders, who met for the fifth time this year, discussed a range of bilateral matters and the agreements in fields such as space, civil aviation, maritime technology, medicine, yoga, and education, NDTV reported.

India and Germany have acknowledged the need to further deepen bilateral defence cooperation as strategic partners to jointly address global and regional security challenges.

Eric Schweitzer, president of the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK), earlier said India had enormous potential but there has been uncertainty among companies after an investment protection agreement between the two countries ended in 2016. Furthermore, because of the complicated bureaucratic procedures in India, German investors hold back from making investments.
