E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial finally gets a sequel

As it is almost four decades since E.T. was last with his pal, the extraterrestrial is introduced to the internet for the first time with Thomas' Elliot even telling E.T.: "Lots changed since you were here".

The lovable extra-terrestrial from Steven Spielberg's 1982 classic "E.T." has reunited with Elliott, actor Henry Thomas, in a heartwarming new commercial from Comcast Xfinity.

They did a very nice job of making the new CGI E.T. look and move like the clunky (but so lifelike) practical E.T. puppet designed by Carlo Rambaldi. I won't lie, I teared up a little.

The ad is part of a larger initiative surrounding E.T. and parent company Comcast, which owns NBC, Universal Pictures (the studio that made the film) and Xfinity.

Now, nearly 40 years later, E.T. and his old pal Elliott finally reunited - in a new commercial for Xfinity.

But then the son's shirt starts to glow, and he finds the same orb E.T. used to see his family - and this time, Elliott and his kids can see E.T.!

"The audience is going to get everything they want out of a sequel without the messy bits that could destroy the beauty of the original and the special place it has in people's minds and hearts", said Thomas in a statement to Variety.

Of course, E.T. also takes Elliott's children for a ride across the face of the moon on flying bicycles and says a heartfelt goodbye to his friends as he returns home to his own family. "It's really a win-win".

At the end of the day, it may be a corporate-branded way of tapping into nostalgia, but it works. Thomas also said that Spielberg was apparently on board for the commercial, "because the integrity of the story isn't lost in this retelling".
