Fans loved the first episode of 'His Dark Materials' last night

The story remains both simple - a young girl, Lyra ("Logan's" Dafne Keen), who is destined for great things, according to prophecy - and convoluted.

It's been a long wait but it's nearly time for the premiere of the His Dark Materials TV series. And they hope it will fare significantly better than the poorly received first attempt to adapt Pullman's acclaimed imaginative fiction, the 2007 film "The Golden Compass".

The networks have just released the show's opening sequence and it looks like a visual masterpiece while also giving us Game of Thrones vibes.

"His Dark Materials" (9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, HBO): HBO executives have high hopes for this ambitious series adaptation of Philip Pullman's award-winning trilogy of the same name.

Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) has adapted the novels for TV, with the first two episodes directed by Oscar victor Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) in what is said to be the BBC's most expensive production ever.

"Running home to catch the HIS DARK MATERIALS ep.1 tonight be like:", Keen wrote.

Orphan Lyra Belacqua's world is turned upside-down by her long-absent uncle's return from the north, while the glamorous Mrs Coulter visits.
In a world ruled by a singular organization, The Magisterium, a sinister plot brews involving child kidnapping, setting in motion a chain of events that take Lyra Belacqua on the journey of a lifetime.

Ever since its announcement, His Dark Materials has steadily been building up positive hype.

When the glamorous and mesmeric Mrs Coulter (Ruth Wilson) enters Lyra's life she embarks upon a risky journey of discovery from Oxford to London. In The Subtle Knife she is joined on her journey by Will, a boy who possesses a knife that can cut windows between worlds.

The eagerly-anticipated adaptation of Philip Pullman's beloved trilogy of novels made its debut on BBC One last night (3.11.19) but there was a mixed reaction from viewers.

A new episode will drop every week on Tuesdays, with eight episodes making up the first season.
