'Fantastic Adventures' YouTube mom accused of abusing her children has died

The plan, Volkmer told ABC 15 at the time, was to get Hobson the care she needed to be healthy enough to return to police custody.

The Maricopa County Police Department confirmed the woman's death.

With titles like "The FLOOR IS LAVA!" and "Escape The Babysitter!" each of the episodes featured the children in lightsaber battles, turning into superheroes or attempting to steal cookies. However, behind the camera the 48-year-old was accused of beating the kids, dousing them with pepper spray and locking them in a closet for days without food, water or bathroom access. They have been assigned caseworkers and legal advocates, who are trying to find the children new permanent homes - and keep them all together, Volkmer said. It's unclear whether Hobson had been hospitalized since May. He said he wasn't able to elaborate on Hobson's medical condition.

Hobson had pleaded not guilty to the charges against her before her death, but had been ruled incompetent to stand trial by state and defense doctors in August.

Hobson, who goes by her maiden name but is also known as Hackney, operated the YouTube channel Fantastic Adventures, which had 800,000 subscribers and more than 250 million total views.

She had been facing 29 charges, including multiple counts of child abuse, kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment, after it was alleged that she starved, beat and tortured her children with pepper spray if she did not like how they performed for the YouTube channel, The Arizona Republic reports.

"It's kind of scary that you could live that close to somebody and not know that they are abusing their children in such an bad way", said Lisa Moreno, who lived near Hobson's old home. "It's terrible, nobody had any clue that was going on there".

Hobson's two sons, Ryan and Logan Hackney, were initially implicated and charged with seven counts of "failing to report the abuse of a minor".

Hobson pulled the children out of school, police said, and once pinched one boy's genitals so hard he bled.

"We were looking forward to the opportunity of proving our charges and proving her guilt in this case", Volkmer said.
