Gophers Move Up to #8 in College Football Playoff Rankings

Oklahoma, the highest-ranked Big 12 team at No. 10, dropped a spot after a one-point victory against Iowa State. The Buckeyes were bumped to No. 2. Before the AP Top 25 was announced and before tonight's CFP was released, Bama was expected to slide after falling to higher ranked LSU.

But it is sanctioned by the powers that be in and around college football and its incomplete playoff, the one bound to leave the Utes or other deserving teams wanting.

CFP selection committee chair and OR athletic director Rob Mullens referenced multiple times the discussions between No. 4 Georgia, which defeated No. 11 Florida and No. 16 Notre Dame and lost to SC, and No. 5 Alabama, which just lost to top-ranked LSU, without mentioning the No. 6 Ducks.

OR was sixth and fellow Pac-12 team Utah was seventh.

Oklahoma travels to Baylor this weekend. "They have a powerful offense and have added a win against a highly ranked team".

Georgia, at No. 4 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, is in the thick of the national championship conversation.

So to recap, if the remaining playoff contenders win out and Alabama has to make its case for getting the fourth playoff spot, it doesn't have a particularly strong argument. Can it get there again? Playing in a hostile Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, the Tigers snapped their streak of eight consecutive losses to the Crimson Tide thanks to three touchdowns each from LSU quarterback Joe Burrow and running back Clyde Edwards Helaire. Conversely, Ohio State and Georgia still have huge games on their schedules that could knock them out of the top-four before the season ends. The Nittany Lions finished fifth in the committee's final rankings with an 11-2 record. At this point, it's really Ohio State's conference, but MI has somewhat regained its footing and lies only a couple of spots ahead of Notre Dame. That game was much more one-sided throughout than the score would indicate, and it took a pretty furious Sooners comeback to get it down to one score.

That was also the story of the 2017 selection process. The Ducks opened the season with a six-point loss to Auburn, and this whole debate assumes Alabama wins out, which means beating Auburn.

So it's really just Alabama vs. OR vs. Oklahoma vs. Minnesota. The Tigers play next on Saturday night at MS (4-6, 2-4) in a game nicknamed the Magnolia Bowl.

So what does Alabama need to happen this year to keep its streak of playoff appearances alive?

Ohio State has another week before their next major test with Penn State. Be that as it may, if those two groups finish out as undefeated gathering champions, how might the panel judge them in the event that one-misfortune Alabama is sitting in the blend?

Alabama is certainly one of the most talented teams in the country, and it would probably be favored against just about any other opponent. On Nov. 23, there is a rehearsal game for Auburn before the Iron Bowl. And that was it.

What ever you come to really feel, Cole Cubelic of the SEC Community tweeted out a brain-blowing fact about Alabama's place within the standings.

Unlike this Alabama team, that Ohio State team had a few close calls as it sorted out a quarterback competition between Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett. It's Georgia, who travel to Auburn this Saturday, who will face the toughest test of any team in the top-four after this week's second poll. Its sole loss was to LSU, boasting the best team in the nation, and in that game, the Crimson Tide nearly mounted a late comeback after trailing by 20 at the half. The Michigan State team that beat Ohio State had already lost to a Nebraska team that finished under.500. Alabama clearly is a strong team, but the committee gave the edge to Georgia.
