Greta Thunberg to set sail for Spain

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has set sail across the Atlantic for the second time in a few months on a boat whose passengers include an 11-month-old baby.

"He's so extreme and he says so extreme things, so I think people wake up by that in a way", the 16-year-old said from on board a sailboat preparing to depart from the East Coast town of Hampton, Virginia for Europe early on Wednesday.

The catamaran left from Hampton, Virginia and will be Greta's home for the next two to three weeks, depending on the weather conditions.

The 16-year-old Swedish activist, who has been making speeches and leading protests across the US and Canada since August, planned to travel to Chile for the upcoming United Nations climate summit, known as COP25. She traveled from Sweden to the United States by yacht in August.

She was meant to follow that date by visiting the COP25 in Santiago, Chile, but civil unrest in the South American nation forced the event's relocation to Spain - which is, quite annoyingly, back on the other side of the Atlantic.

Students across the world began emulating her campaign, leading to organised school walkouts and the rise of the "Fridays for Future" movement which targets government action on climate change.

On Tuesday, an artist unveiled a mural of Thunberg in San Francisco to remind residents of the dangers posed by climate change.

La Vagabonde will take roughly three weeks to reach Spain, where Thunberg hopes to arrive in time for the next round of UN-sponsored climate talks. "If anyone could help me find transport I would be so grateful", she posted on Twitter on November 1.

La Vagabonde is a 48-foot catamaran equipped with solar panels and a hydro generator, making the journey "as close to zero emissions as possible", Thunberg's media team said in a news release.

Thunberg showed her typical aplomb before taking to the high seas.

"She looks like a little girl but her personality - she's really independent, she knows what she wants and she's really sweet and really helpful", Carausu said. After that, she was looking forward to going back home to Stockholm and hugging her two dogs.

They've been sailing on their yacht, La Vagabond ever since and have a 10-month-old son, Lenny.

Whitelum said in a statement the couple "saw Greta's request for help and made a decision to offer our support, because we are sympathetic to her cause".

On Wednesday, Ms Thunberg said on social media a group, including Australians Riley Whitelum and Elayna Carausu, offered to help her make the voyage.

"We must realize this is a crisis, and we must do what we can now to spread awareness about this and to put pressure on the people in power", she told The Guardian.

For 2020, "I don't have any plans right now", she says.
