Hong Kong student dies after fall during protest clash

Chow Tsz-lok, a second-year computer science undergraduate at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), reportedly fell from the third floor to the second floor of a auto park in Tseung Kwan O on Sunday, while police carried out a dispersal operation nearby with rounds of tear gas fired, reports the South China Morning Post.

They also wore masks in a snub of a government ban last month on the wearing of facial coverings at rallies. He later died in hospital.

But Mr Chow's death is expected to fuel more anger at the police, who are already under pressure as Hong Kong faces its worst crisis in decades.

Chow had been found lying unconscious in a pool of blood inside a multistory vehicle park that police had fired tear gas at, as protesters hurled objects from the building.

Hong Kong is part of China but as a former British colony it has some autonomy and people have more rights.

Thousands left flowers at the spot in which he fell at the auto park.

Dressed in formal graduation gowns, numerous students chanted as they walked from a metro station to the ceremony venue, calling for the government to respond to protesters' demands that include universal suffrage.

Other people gathered in the shopping district of Causeway Bay, lining the streets in silence.

Chow was a student at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. "We played netball together for a year". "I hope he can rest in peace".

"I do not think this is a fair conviction and it may lead to police abuse in prosecution of possession of laser pointers without good evidence of the intention of hurting people", he told The Associated Press.

Besides the chaos at the HKUST campus, hundreds of people took to the streets of the city to mourn Chow's death, the South China Morning Post reported. They pose one of the biggest challenges for Chinese President Xi Jinping since he took charge in 2012. Some carried white flowers and placards that read "Hong Kong is a police state".

Since June, protesters have thrown petrol bombs and vandalized banks, stores and metro stations.

The exact circumstances of his fall are unclear, but reports said he was trying to get away from tear gas.

In June, Marco Leung, 35, fell to his death from construction scaffolding after unfurling banners against the extradition bill. The protestors want a thorough investigation into the first fatality linked to the months-long demonstrations. Chanting "Stand with Hong Kong", they spray-painted Chow's name and pinned photos and signs of him on nearby walls.

SINGAPORE police are investigating a YouTube star from Hong Kong who allegedly organised a gathering to discuss the protests in his home city, a potential violation of tough public assembly laws.

In response to media inquiries, a government spokesman expressed great sorrow and regret over Chow's death and extended sympathies to his family. Police have repeatedly denied any allegations of wrongdoing in relation to the death.

The carpark management said it would release closed-circuit television footage as soon as possible.

He had fallen during protests at the weekend earlier.
