Intelligence Panel Will Move Quickly to Release Report on Impeachment

The U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee on Tuesday invited President Donald Trump to its first impeachment hearing, scheduled for December 4, starting the next phase in a process that could lead to formal charges against the president.

Lawrence, a House Democrat hailing from a desirable swing state, made waves in recent days after veering from her Democrat colleagues and suggesting that they censure Trump rather than impeach him. George Conway, the husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, argued on Twitter Tuesday that President Donald Trump can be impeached twice if more evidence of wrongdoing is presented. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) attends a news conference, April 9, 2019, in Washington, D.C.

Nadler sent Trump a letter notifying him of the hearing and giving him until December 1 to say whether he or he attorney plan to participate.

At the center of the impeachment inquiry, which began in September, is Trump's July 25 phone call with Ukraine's president.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment or respond to Nadler's letter.

Trump has said he would "strongly consider" giving written testimony to House impeachment investigators after Speaker Nancy Pelosi challenged him to testify if he thought the proceedings were unfair, as he has routinely charged.

That, in turn, followed depositions from 17 witnesses from behind closed doors.

Lawmakers in the Democratic-led House of Representatives spent the last two weeks publicly questioning witnesses including White House officials and diplomats over allegations that Trump abused the power of his office when he pressured Ukraine to launch investigations that would help him politically.

Schiff added, "The investigative work continues, and we are learning additional information nearly every day". "While we invite you to this hearing, we remind you that if you continue to refuse to make witnesses and documents available to the committee of jurisdiction.'the chair shall have the discretion to impose appropriate remedies'". In that conversation, Trump asked Zelenskiy for a "favor" - the investigations he wanted - after he and Ukrainian officials had been primed by US officials and others, witnesses have said.

In a letter to members of Congress, Schiff said "this is an urgent matter that can not wait if we are to protect the nation's security and the integrity of our elections".

"This conduct directed by the president not only became more "insidious" over time, but was known to the vice president, the president's chief of staff, the secretary of state, and others down the line".
