London's Piccadilly Theatre evacuated after partial ceiling collapse

"We've been in close contact with emergency services who were on the scene last night to evacuate theatre patrons and treat those injured", a council statement added. Witnesses reported hearing running water before the section fell. The incident occurred about 30 minutes into the evening performance of the Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell-helmed revival of Death of a Salesman, which officially opened in the West End November 4.

George said: "About 10 minutes into the performance you could hear this slight dripping sound in the [Grand] circle and people were looking around, wondering what was happening, but the play carried on".

Following the incident, Pierce thanked audience members for a safe evacuation, apologizing for the unexpected cancellation of the performance, and urging them to come back to see the production.

"We are so honoured that you came tonight and so sorry that this happened".

American actor Pierce, who stars within the play, became once spotted addressing the evacuated viewers on the boulevard.

'Then, as we stood up, this broad chunk of ceiling, about three to four metres across, crashed down. A few people have suffered minor injuries.

'There were people screaming at that point and everyone got up and streamed down the stairs'. They were super quick and organised to evacuate and very informative.

Police said everyone had left the theatre and a few had minor injuries.

The Association of British Theatre Technicians has also said it would assist in trying to understand whether the ceiling involved was made from suspended fibrous plaster, as was the case in the partial collapse at the Apollo Theatre in 2013.

"Everyone is out of the theatre". 'Facet road closures in feature.

Around 1000 people were ushered out and five people who were sitting in the Upper Circle were treated for minor injuries. The Metropolitan police have closed the roads to the surrounding area and advised motorists to use alternative routes.
