Nicolas Cage to play Nicolas Cage in new movie

It seems like actor Nicolas Cage is constantly taking up crazier roles in even crazier movies - but this next project might just be his craziest yet.

Nicolas Cage is to play himself in a film called The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, it has been announced. Yeah, this one might be hard to beat. In the film, his character is desperate to get a role in a new Quentin Tarantino movie while also dealing with a strained relationship with his teenage daughter. The screenplay, written without Cage's knowledge by Tom Gormican (writer/director of little know rom-com That Awkward Moment) and Kevin Etten (creator of Fox's short lived Ghosted), was never supposed to be seen by anyone who might actually buy it.

The film would show Cage meeting up with an egotistical Nineties version of himself, who mocks his future self for not being famous, along with making too many low-budget films. And, if everything goes according to plan, Nicolas Cage would of course get to play one of his most weird roles yet - himself.

Thanks to his mountain of debt, fictional Cage finds himself being forced to make an appearance at the birthday party of a Mexican billionaire who happens to be a fan of Cage's works.

Throw in a separate plot in which he's trying to persuade a billionaire to produce his new movie - a billionaire who turns out to be a drug cartel kingpin under surveillance by the Central Intelligence Agency for kidnapping the daughter of a Mexican politician, with Cage then recruited to go undercover - and we have what's likely to be the best movie of all time. The idea presented by The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent that Nicholas Cage may be in serious need of money and feel creatively unfulfilled may not be so far away from the reality of his real life.

In 2018, Cage had said that he only plans to continue as an actor for three or four more years after which he intends to focus on direction.

Multiple reports, including NME, suggest that Gormican sent Cage a copy of the script along with a letter, calling The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent a "love letter" to his career rather than a mockery or parody of it.
