Potential No. 1 pick James Wiseman ruled ineligible by NCAA

Potential No. 1 pick James Wiseman ruled ineligible by NCAA

Wiseman will be allowed to play in Memphis' game Friday night after a court-issued "emergency temporary restraining order" was put into effect less than one hour before tip-off, according to a statement released by Memphis.

His attorney said Memphis received a letter Tuesday from the NCAA declaring Wiseman ineligible, which stems originally from Hardaway's $1 million donation to the university's Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. Hardaway was deemed a booster in the case.

However, a Shelby County judge on Friday halted the NCAA's ruling for the time being, making Wiseman eligible to play Friday night when the No. 14 Tigers hosted Illinois-Chicago. After several months of interviews and, after a review of documentation, it was determined that in the summer of 2017, while James was a high school student and prospective student-athlete, Penny Hardaway provided $11,500 in moving expenses to assist the Wiseman family in their relocation to Memphis, unbeknownst to James. The coach also made clear that Wiseman will continue to play, at least until a November 18 hearing, and liked how the freshman handled a roller-coaster day.

Wiseman started and Memphis (2-0) immediately took a double-digit lead leaving the only doubt of the night the status of the 7-foot freshman who could be the top pick in next summer in the National Basketball Association draft. Wiseman and Hardaway teamed up to win a state championship in Wiseman's junior year, then Hardaway took the Memphis job.

The season for a top University of Memphis basketball player - and potential top pick in the NBA draft - is in jeopardy. Rudd said Memphis supports Wiseman's right to challenge the NCAA ruling.

Memphis: While Memphis easily won its second game of the season, Wiseman's status and thus the impact on the Tigers was uncertain. Wiseman experienced three details and four blocks as Memphis jumped to a 30-13 guide. "We will acknowledge and accept responsibility for proven violations of NCAA bylaws".

Wiseman was ranked as the top overall recruit in the Class of 2019 by Rivals and was the biggest piece of a Memphis recruiting class that was also ranked top in the nation.

Memphis skilled its 2007-08 time vacated by the NCAA, which included a nationwide runner-up full and a faculty-report 38 wins, when Derrick Rose was declared academically ineligible.
