Sheriff Says Nathaniel Berhow Used 'Ghost Gun' in Saugus High School Shooting

The subject also had in his possession a rudimentary hand-drawn map of the school as well as a list containing names of both students and staff members from the school. He did not identify the student, say when the arrest or threat were made, and did not name the school.

Late Friday morning, Pasadena police went to La Salle High School after a smartphone notification app mistakenly circulated unfounded information of an active shooter on campus, said Lisa Derderian of the city of Pasadena. "In this case, the point that people stepped forward and said what they had discovered led us to be able to prevent a misfortune today".

Investigators were trying to determine who owns the gun that authorities initially called a ghost gun - a weapon without a serial number made from parts from other guns.

Multiple students overheard the threat, Villanueva said, and teachers emailed the administration about their concerns.

The boy said he would conduct the shooting on Friday at Animo Mae Jemison Charter High School in Willanbrook, Villanueva told a news conference.

A student who was allegedly found with an unregistered assault rifle, ammunition, body armor and list of intended victims was arrested Thursday.

The 13-year-old was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats, according to Sgt Bob Boese, a spokesman for the Los Angeles county sheriff. Police also took a relative of the accused student into custody. The shooting earlier this month at Saugus High School was the first fatal shooting on a campus since the school year began. No weapon was recovered.

Police don't yet know where and when Berhow got the handgun or what his motive was for the shooting at Saugus High. In a previous tweet, Sheriff Tim Murakami referred to the capture of a "ghost weapon", but Villanueva clarified that the weapon in the case of threat has a serial number. While it's not clear who assembled it, police say the parts can be bought online or at gun shows without a background check and instructions can be found on YouTube, meaning 16-year-old Nathaniel Berhow could have easily put it together himself.
