Apple lands first Golden Globe nominations; Netflix leads field

The Golden Globes, which feature separate awards for dramas and musicals/comedies, are known for favoring star-studded movies that perform well at the box office, often with scant regard for critics' reviews.

In television - where the Globes, by virtue of their scheduling four months after the Emmys, often pick up on trends early - Apple TV+ received love for "The Morning Show", with bids for best drama and its stars Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

Back in 2014, Netflix bum-rushed awards season for the first time with five Golden Globe nominations for its first major original series House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black. Unlike Gerwig's 2017 film, "Lady Bird", which earned four nods from the HFPA, "Little Women" was recognized exclusively for its lead performance from Saoirse Ronan, who plays Jo March in the movie.

What movie do you think will win the "Best Animated Film" award? The women hardly make it to the nominations. Pundits were expecting that slot would go to Constance Wu for "Hustlers" or Kaitlyn Dever for "Booksmart".

De Niro, the star of The Irishman, was left out of the best actor race, although his co-stars Al Pacino and Joe Pesci won nods for their supporting roles and Scorsese will compete for best director.

Leading the nominations on the TV side this year are HBO and Sky's Chernobyl and Netflix's The Crown.

New streaming platform Apple TV+, launched last month, secured its first nominations, for flagship launch program "The Morning Show". The comedy, in which she played a cynical vice president, hasn't won a single Golden Globe.

She told the LA Times: "No woman wants to get nominated because it's the right thing to do".

Next year's show will boast, once again, an all-male roster of nominees: Boon Joon-ho (Parasite), Sam Mendes (1917), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman), Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood) and Todd Phillips (Joker).
